This past week, I watched Trevor Noah’s comedy special, Joy in the Trenches (2026) and he posed a thought-provoking question:
Who will you be when history calls?
Inviting the audience to recognize that when history is unfolding in real-time, victories don’t seem as "inevitable" or cut and dry as they appear when we look back. It happens choice by choice. The people in our history books (and those left out of them) may not have realized which side of history they were choosing as it happened.
So this question is particularly important as we navigate challenges like the current political climate, the age of AI, climate change, mental health crisis, and so on.
I loved the question and decided to remix it to:
Who will you be when the future calls?
Insight
I believe our soul is always calling us forward, to evolve beyond what we’ve known. Inviting us to explore where we are and take it further into new territories, within ourselves and then, the world around us.
New territories of Love. and where there is Love, there is heart and soul. And purpose and fulfillment.
Since the mind can only hold what it has seen before and then, replicate it, we need to do more than look to history to know ourselves. We must look forward to call in what we have never seen before.
To be innovative, imaginative, creative, discerning, and courageous.
To trust in something greater than ourselves.
All of which comes through soul alignment. Answering that call is choosing to live in our light.
I believe there is a spark of light within each of us, waiting to be (re)kindled and tended. And it is not for anyone else to decide what that looks like for us. It is ours to discover. Though we certainly support each other along the way.
Living in our Light is an act of love — self-love and love of others, which become one and the same — and it becomes essential to intentionally surround ourselves with people who are ready to live in their light as well.
I say the word ready intentionally. Because it is an individual choice to make and keep recommitting to in thought, word, and action. To say yes. And live in that yes. And each person has their own path to that yes, and after that yes.
The alternative is that it becomes increasingly difficult to live outside of our light. Because life outside of our light is darkness. Illusion. Repetitive. Isolating. Mostly led by a fragmented self who is doing everything it can to hold things together without the leverage of its true energy.
Meanwhile, living in our light is self-sustaining. It is nourishing, and unifying. It brings us into community because it takes a village to do this work. So be mindful of the illusion that any of us can, or are, doing life alone — because no great masterpiece is done singularly.
Answering the call of the future is allowing ourselves to mature. To evolve. To grow in the Fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23).
No longer justifying being in the darkness for any reason other than to transform it. To bring it home to Love and Light.
